Fealty

• Fealty is a relationship between a liege and a vassal.
• Diplomatic relationships do not affect fealty or vice versa.
• Offer or demand an oath of fealty with a proposal.

  Lieges and Vassals :

  • Lords that pledge an oath of fealty become a vassal.
  • Lords that are given fealty become a liege.
  • Lords may pledge an oath of fealty to only one liege at a time.
  • Lords under protection may not enter into a fealty agreement.
  • A liege may have any number of vassals.
  • Lords sworn to the council may not have vassals.
  • All Civil Defence Fleets belonging to the vassal become Banner Fleets for the liege.
  • A liege automatically receives tribute from each of their vassals every cycle.
  • A vassal automatically receives patronage from their liege every cycle.
  • Oaths may be offered, requested, demanded or revoked in the diplomacy panel.
  • Lords may be both a liege and a vassal at the same time. (Fealty is both given and received)
  • Subjects are all vassals and all the lords in the hierarchy of lieges and vassals below them.
  • The example fealty chart below illustrates these concepts.

  Rank and Titles :

  • Initially your title is Lord or Lady.
  • You gain a higher rank when you have vassals.
  • Your rank is one higher than your highest ranked vassal.
    Example Fealty Chart

    	Count
    Baron	Viscount	Viscount
    Lord	Baron	Baron	Baron
    Lord	Lord	Lord	Lord

    Example 1:

You have 3 vassals, but they themselves have no vassals, then your rank is 2 = Baron or Baroness.

    Example 2:

You have several vassals, the highest rank being Viscount, thus your title is Count.

    Example 3:

In the chart on the right you can see it matters naught the number of vassals, only the highest rank. The Count has 3 vassals and a total of 11 subjects. The Viscount on the far right has 2 vassals and 4 subjects.

  Sovereignty :

  • The top liege in a fealty hierarchy is a sovereign (liege must have at least one vassal).
  • A sovereign receives a subsidy of 500 per rank per cycle.
  • Lords on the monarch victory path receive 10% more subsidy.
  • This symbolises tribute from all subjects.
  • A sovereign receives 100 prestige per rank.

  Patronage from a Liege :

  • Patronage is automatically received by a vassal each cycle.
  • This symbolises advisors, aid and support transferred to a vassal from their liege.
  • The initial amount received is based on the rank of both the liege and the vassal.
  • Patronage slowly decreases each cycle to a minimum of 500.
This effect applies to the liege as well. If the same two players just swap liege for vassal, the new vassal (previous liege) will have the same patronage as the old vassal.
  • The patronage reduction value for a specific lord will decrease each cycle that lord is not one's liege.
This means that after some time, the ex-liege will be a good source of patronage again.
  • If rank changes for either vassal or liege, patronage will be calculated as if the new rank was always the case.
  • Lords on the bannerman victory path receive 10% more patronage.
  • Patronage costs the liege nothing.
  • Patronage is converted into subsidies, using the subsidy ratio.

  Initial Patronage
  	Liege Rank
  Vassal Rank
  	2,950	2,800	2,650	2,500	2,350	2,200	2,050	1,900	1,750	1,600
  	•	2,600	2,450	2,300	2,150	2,000	1,850	1,700	1,550	1,400
  	•	•	2,250	2,100	1,950	1,800	1,650	1,500	1,350	1,200

  Tribute from Vassals :

  • Tribute is automatically received by a liege for each vassal every cycle.
  • This symbolises labour, material and wealth transferred to a liege from a vassal.
  • Tribute is converted into subsidies, using the subsidy ratio.
  • Lords on the monarch victory path receive 10% more tribute.
  • In addition to the tribute for subsidies, each vassal gains the liege 500 ship support credits.
  • Tribute costs the vassal nothing.

    Tribute per Vassal per Cycle
    Vassal Habitat Levels
    25	50	75	100	125	150	175
    1,612	1,866	2,061	2,225	2,369	2,500	2,620

  Esprit de Corps (EdC) :

  • Esprit de Corps is a combat bonus based on fealty and dominance.
  • You receive 2% per your rank. (so minimum EdC is 2%)
  • If you have a liege you get 5%.
  • If you have vassals, you get 2% per vassal.
  • The maximum EdC bonus is 20%

    Example:

Your rank is 3 (Viscount), you have a liege and you have 5 vassals.
    Your EdC would be 2 X 3 + 5 + 2 X 5 for a total of 21%, but reduced to 20% (Maximum)

  Ministers :

  • Vassals may be appointed to a ministry, they then become the minister for that ministry.
  • Each ministry in a realm may be held by only one vassal.
  • Each vassal may only hold one ministry at a time.
  • When dismissed from a ministry, the appointment is lost immediately (bonuses are no longer in effect).
  • When appointed to a ministry, the appointment is not gained until the end of cycle.
  • If appointed to a new ministry, the old appointment is held until the change at cycle end.
  • At cycle end bonuses are applied for the new appointment.
  • A vassal earns 25 prestige when they are a minister, 50 prestige for ministry of culture.
  • Each ministry gives a bonus in a specific area. See the table below.
